More than 94% of voters who cast ballots Monday in Tunisia said "yes" to the new Constitution proposal, according to results announced late Tuesday by the electoral body to the press. A victory with a very large majority of those who voted, but with participation of approximately 30%, according to the figure published Tuesday.
A figure denounced earlier in the day by the opposition coalition National Salvation Front. The FSN, which had called for a boycott, judges it "inflated" and sees it as a sign of failure for Kaïs Saïed. Its leader, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, is calling on the head of state to organize early general elections.
The new text dismantles the parliamentary system that has been in force since 2014, under the Constitution drawn up following the revolution, in the cradle of the Arab Spring.
"Tunisia has entered a new phase," declared the Tunisian president after the vote. The authorities have one month to proclaim the final results of the referendum. The new Constitution will then come into force. Legislative elections are then scheduled for December 17.
